The Obsidian Deeps is a sector of space with no stars, leaving it forever in perpetual darkness. This has led to all life there evolving an enhanced sense of hearing in exchange for blindness. Rot Lop Fan is a bipedal creature born in this sector of space, that never had a Green Lantern. As part of an attempt to expand the Corps, Katma Tui travels to the Obsidian Deeps, labeled as Sector 911 by the Corps, and finds Rot Lop Fan.
Fan is a brave and noble being, possessing great Willpower. However, Rot Lop Fan and his people have no concept of what green or lanterns are, which presents a difficulty in inducting him to the group. Katma decides to try a different tact and ask Rot to imagine a sound with a pleasing resonance. He does and communicates it to her as a sound in the F-Sharp range. This connects him to the power ring, which transforms itself into a bell shape, and makes him the “first” member of the “F-Sharp Bell Corps.”
Rot Lop Fan serves his sector well for years, occasionally leaving it to join up with other Green Lanterns. After the second destruction of the Central Power Battery, Rot is among a group of Lanterns that are captured and forced into slavery. He is later rescued by Guy Gardner and resumes his service to the Corps.
