The son of Mongul, also named Mongul, was a young boy that desperately wanted to be like his father. He watched recordings of his father battling Superman as well as destroying Coast City. He emulates his father, enslaving a crew of aliens that crash land on his home planet. When Mongul senior returns to find this, he kills the aliens because, “there is only one on this planet worth of adoration.”

When the younger Mongul reaches adulthood he arrives on Earth in order to train Superman in preparation of the arrival of Imperiex. He later attempts to loot the Watchtower only to battle Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman. He escapes to Earth and uses the Black Mercy on Green Lantern and Green Arrow. When the two emerald warriors break free of the Black Mercy, they find Mongul speaking with his sister Mongal and teleport the two spawn of Mongul back to their home planet. Once there, Mongul tells his sister that, “family is a weakness,” and kills her.

Mongul later encounters a member of the Sinestro Corps and breaks his neck, in the process receiving that member’s power ring. Enjoying the power, Mongul offers every Sinestro Corps member he meets a choice: serve him or die. Each one that refuses is killed and their ring is worn by Mongul, adding to his power. Mongul goes on to attack Arisia and Sodam Yat with Black Mercy plants as well as sending thousands of Black Mercy seeds to several planets, having changed the plants to bring the victims greatest fears to life.
The Green Lantern Corps stops him and sends him down to the Black Mercy planet, where the deadly plants sever his left arm.

Mongul manages to free himself and use the power of his multiple rings to control and re-attach his left arm. Mongul goes on to conquer Daxam and establish it as the home world of his renamed Mongul Corps. Arkillo attempts to challenge Mongul for leadership but is defeated and brutalized by the Mongul Corps leader.

This draws the attention of Arisia and Sodam Yat, who had become the host for Ion. The two Green Lanterns manage to defeat several Mongul Corps members and Yat even is able to briefly press Mongul back. However, under the red sun of Daxam, Sodam’s great strength fades. Knowing he must free his planet, Yat flies into the sun and uses Ion to transform the sun from red to yellow. This gives all of the Daxamites Superman-like powers, which they are able to use to expel the Mongul Corps.

Without a home world, Mongul takes his corps to Korugar and terrorizes the inhabitants. This draws the attention of Sinestro who uses a override built into all Sinestro Corps rings to leave Mongul powerless. Sinestro defeats him and imprisons him in the yellow Central Power Battery under torture, intending to kill him once the Black Lantern Corps has been dealt with.
