Waiting for the end of time when he can slay men and gods alike, Surtur is temporarily improsioned inside the Earth after trying to destroy it alongside the trolls. Loki uses a portion of the Odinforce to free Surtur and lets him loose on Midgard alongside the Storm Giant Skagg. There they are met by Odin, Thor and Balder with the Allfather sending every human on the planet to another dimension. Surtur attempts to use a giant fireball to melt the polar ice caps only for Thor to stop him with Odin’s sword before sending the fire giant to a meteorite in another galaxy.
Surtur and Ymir are later summoned back to Earth by the Sons of Satannish before being banished by the Avengers, Black Knight and Doctor Strange. The heroes trick the villains into striking each other, which results in their defeat. Surtur manages to attack Asgard during the Odinsleep but is ultiamtely repelled and imprisoned. After escaping his imprisonment, he forges Twilight, the Sword of Doom and unleashes a fire demon invasion on Earth while attacking Asgard once more. Loki, Thor, and Odin fight together to defeat Surtur with the fire demon and Odin falling into a dimensional rift. A long time later, Odin returns with Surtur’s essence trapped within him. Eventually, Surtur is able to possess the Allfather before recreating his physical form and again attacking Asgard. Thor, wielding the Odin Power, is able to banish Surtur to the Sea of Eternal Night.
When Thor attempts to allow Ragnarok in order to break the Asgardian reincarnation cycle, he allows Surtur to storm and ravage Asgard.
Surtur is eventually reborn once more and is able to ally with Loki to depose the gods of the British Isles. He is able to burn Yggdrasil and turn the Vanir gods against the Aesir due to old grudges.
