The Wendigo is no mere individual; it is a curse that has haunted the wilderness of Northern Canada for time untold. It afflicts a person when they feed on human flesh in the forest of Canada. The Inua created the curse to deter human cannibalism. Once cursed, the former human becomes a monstrous feral fur covered beast comparable to a yeti or sasquatch. Paul Cartier is the first Wendigo to battle superheroes.
Paul Cartier Wendigo battles the Hulk twice before also finding and fighting Wolverine. As Paul is freed from the curse, Georges Baptiste inherits it. Batptiste attacks a group of civilians before battling Wolverine, Nightcrawler and Alpha Flight. Alpha Flight eventually captures Baptiste and is cured by Shaman before being turned over to Department H’s custody.
Francois Lartigue is the next to be cursed and battles the Hulk as well as Sasquatch before also being cured by Shaman.
A new, anonymous, Wendigo is discovered by reporter Anna Brooks in her search for Bigfoot. Peter Parker is sent to get photos of the beast while Wolverine also seeks the creature out. Spider-Man and Wolverine then team up to stop the creature from hurting anyone else. A Wendigo also battles Werewolf by Night. Sabretooth is hired to kill a Wendigo and proves successful in the mission.
A new Wendigo emerges and rampages before being taken down by Wolverine and She-Hulk. After the Wendigo is beaten by the combined might of the heroes, it is placed into S.H.I.E.L.D custody. Department K later receives the prisoner and uses a shock collar to control it, making it a part of Weapon P.R.I.M.E. PRIME’s mission is to take down Cable but they prove unsuccessful against Cable and X-Force. This Wendigo is later given a neurological implant that allows the person inside to control the beast more.
A pack of Wendigos in the Bering Strait attack and are ultimately beaten by the Red Hulk. The Great Beasts have created this pack to battle against the Chaos King. This pack later travels to Las Vegas and confronts Grey Hulk, Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel and Sentry. After the Hulk transforms into his green form and is transformed into a Gamma Wendigo, Brother Voodoo arrives and cures all afflicted by the curse.
A Wendigo is part of Alpha Strike, a team formed by the Master of the World to take down Alpha Flight. A Wendigo is a member of Omega Flight and helps investigate one of the Origin Bombs left by Ex Nihilo in Regina. Wendigo is killed during the mission.
A Wendigo joins the Hellfire Academy. Another Wendigo is summoned to Las Vegas by Tyrannus to battle the Hulk. The Hulk wins, again.
Two Canadian meat packing plan employees get into an argument which leads to one killing the other and then attempting to cover up the crime by grinding the body up in the plant. This leads to human flesh being sent out with other meat which leads to a mass outbreak of Wendigos. With the sudden power surge, Tanaraq intends to usurp the power of the Great Beasts and spread the Wendigos world wide. This plan is stopped by the combined power of the other Great Beasts, X-Men and Alpha Flight leader Guardian. This also leads the other Great Beasts to temporarily suspend the curse.
A Roxxon execuitve has a miner eat Wendigo flesh, which creates a more powerful version of the curse: the Ur-Wendigo. This Wendigo is stronger than other Wendigos and grows stronger if it eats flesh. Weapon H battles this Ur-Wendigo until Doctor Strange arrives. Weapon H borrow’s Strange’s Ax of Angarruumus and is swallowed by the Ur-Wendgio so that he can kill the beast from inside.
