Beholders are aberrations, creatures that have no place in the natural order. Their spheroid body is covered in an exoskeleton made of several plates with a large singular eye set in it above a fanged mouth. Sprouting from the body are several eye stalks that possess a different magical ability. The main eye of a Beholder projects an anti-magic cone to protect it.

Beholders are a violent, insular and xenophobic species. Some Beholders can use their eyes for non-spell abilities but are often killed or exiled by their species. Some Beholder choose to cast spells like ordinary Wizards and will put out their main eye, to eliminate its anti-magic ability. This makes these Beholders instant outcasts as well. Among most of Beholder culture, no deviation from the norm is accepted and they are willing to engage in war to eliminate it.

Hive Mothers are an exception to this violent standard, using their mind control abilities to form “hives” with other Beholders.

Beholder religion reflects their overall culture. The vast majority worship their insane controlling goddess, the Great Mother, while some follow her rebellious offspring, Gzemnid the beholder god of gases. A few even worship both, as strange as that may seem.
