Sphinx began life as a mutant in ancient Egypt and high wizard to Pharaoh Ramses II. When Moses came to Ramses and bested Sphinx’s powers, the wizard was banished and wandered the desert for years. Eventually, he came upon a strange temple and found the mystical Ka stone which gave him incredible powers and immortality. Calling himself Sphinx, he journeyed the earth for thousands of years, getting into adventures.
After thousands of years of life, the Sphinx wanted to free himself of the Ka stone and, hopefully, live a natural death. This eventually brought Sphinx to Richard Rider, the hero known as Nova, and the alien knowledge Richard had received upon assuming the mantle of Nova. Sphinx hoped to find the key to freeing himself from the Ka stone in this knowledge but was unable to. Eventually, he was able to persuade Nova to help him and take the Egyptian to the alien world of Xandar.
On Xandar, Sphinx was able to absorb incredible power and knowledge and gain the power to free himself. However, for some unknown reason, decided not to do this and instead return to Earth to destroy it. Earth’s heroes were able to contact Galactus and convince the world-eater to defeat Sphinx in defense of Earth. Once Galactus bested Sphinx, the cosmic god destroyed the Ka stone and sent Sphinx into a time loop to live his life over and over again.
Through these time travel shenanigans, Sphinx was able to attempt to restore the destroyed Ka stone and continue his long lived life. However, the intervention of the Thing prevented this plan and the Sphinx aged to dust.
Eventually, the Sphinx was reincarnated into a new body when another is able to channel the power of the Ka stone into reforming itself.
