The woman that would become Shriek was driven to drugs from abuse by her mother regarding her weight. She would go on to be a drug dealer to support her habit, eventually being shot in the head by a police officer and then falling into the dark dimension that Cloak has access to, which gave this woman her powers.

After this, Shriek was incarcerated at Ravencroft. When Carnage escaped from the facility, he brought Shriek with him and the pair led the “Carnage family” as the mother and father, with Demogoblin, Doppelganger and Carrion as their “sons.” Using her powers to mentally influence New Yorkers, Shriek increased the chaos during their destructive spree.

Shriek is repeatedly returned to Ravencroft after escape attempts and altercations with Spider-Man.

Shriek later escapes from Ravencroft after Hall Industries attempts to use her to control the Carnage symbiote (which had been separated from Kassady). The temporary bond drives Shriek (who had been responding to treatment) back into her psychotic personality. Later, the symbiote re-bonds with Kassady and Shriek bonds with a new progeny from Carnage (who would go on to become Scorn after bonding with Shriek’s doctor) and the Carnage family again terrorizes New York.

She later fights the Fearless Defenders as a member of the Doom Maidens and is recruited onto the Sinister Sixteen.
