Born to Crav and Mytra Nah, Ultra Boy has a rough childhood on Rimbor beore joining the Legion. He is a skilled actor which, combined with his background, makes him an excellent member of the Legion Espionage squad where he can infiltrate gangs. In order to join the Legion, he is sent back in time to Smallville to discover Superboy’s secret identity and successfully does so using his “penetra-vision.” After successfully joining the Legion, he explains that he can channel his “ultra-energy” to provide him new super powers, though only one at a time.
During the five year gap, Ultra Boy proposes to Phantom Girl only for her to be seemingly killed in an accident. Giving up the name Ultra Boy, he begins to go by Jo Nah and becomes a smuggler on Rimbor. He eventually rejoins the Legion after assassins destroy an apartment building trying to kill him. Some time later, Glorith begins to manipulate Legion history to her advantage and thinks that only the smarter legionnaires will figure this out. Ultra Boy, who has played “dumb” for years to try and gain advantages against Legion foes realizes Glorith’s plan and successfully foils it on his own. While still maintaining his ignorant cover identity. Glorith realizes Ultra Boy’s ruse years later and sends Phantom Girl into the past, staging her death.
