Today we look at the super ape: Titano

Pre-Crisis

Titano is originally a common cimpanzee named Toto who is rocketed into space. He and his ship are bombarded with radiation that transforms him into a giant ape with enhanced strength and the ability to fire kryptonite radiation beams from his eyes. Though he proves a threat to Superman, Titano is ultimately defeated

Post Crisis

Titano is a normal baby chimpanzee that is experimented on by the US government. He gains the name Titano as the result of a cruel joke made by the staff. He tries to escape by leaping into Lois Lane’s arms during a visit the reporter makes to the lab. Soon after, an accident gives Titano super-strength and causes him to grow large. Titano attempts to kill the head scientist in revenge for his torture but is stopped by Superman. Lois soon arrives on the scene and calms Titano down as he still views her as a friend. The head scientist, Dr. Moyers, is able to reverse the transformation. This is too devastating for the ape, however, as he dies in Lois’ arms.

The New 52

Titano is a slightly larger than average albino gorilla, created by a deranged biophysicist. He is eventually killed by a creature appearing to be Superman. Titano appears to return but is revealed to be a kryptonite powered robot.
