Crazy-Quilt begins his criminal life as a painter leading a double life. He has his henchman commit crimes through clues left in various paintings and builds up a small criminal empire. This crashes down around him, however, when one of the henchman double crosses him. In the ensuing chaos, Quilt is blinded by a gunshot wound. He volunteers for an experimental procedure that restores his vision but limits it to bright colors. He soon gains a helmet that emits bright colors, making sure that he can see while often temporarily blinding his foes. However, the constant exposure to such powerful colors drives him mad.
Crazy-Quilt begins a life of super crime and battles the Boy Commandos, Batman, Batgirl, Dick Grayson and Jason Todd. Crazy-Quilt later kidnaps a surgeon that is able to restore his natural eyesight. However, when Batman and Robin arrive to rescue the surgeon Crazy-Quilt is again blinded by a reflected beam of light from his helmet. This puts a further strain on Quilt’s damaged sanity and he becomes obsessed with Robin. This leads to the unintended consequence of his hatred extending to multiple individuals that take on the Robin role. Quilt later helps one of the incarnations of the Secret Society of Super Villains, though he is soon defeated and captured.
