Sugar Man comes from the Age of Apocalypse alternate timeline. A student of Mr. Sinister’s, Sugar Man learns almost as much as the villain about genetics and the manipulation thereof. After becoming an accomplished scientist in a lab at Niagara Falls, Sugar Man is placed in charge of the Pacific Northwest’s human slave camp the “Seattle Core.” He battles and kills much of Generation Next during a rescue operation before seemingly being destroyed. In reality, Sugar Man manages to shrink down small enough to hide in Colossus’ boot during the final siege on Apocalypse’s citadel. Sugar Man jumps into the M’Kraan Crystal and is sent twenty years back in time on Earth 616.
Sugar Man journeys to Genosha and is instrumental in the enslaving of mutants there. He pulls the strings of several Genoshan governments in this time, hiding his involvement through murder and sabotage when necessary. Sugar Man eventually learns that X-Man has also crossed over to Earth 616 and attempts to have him assassinated. This plan fails, so Sugar Man instead tries to capture Alex Summers. This also fails and Sugar Man gives up when he learns that Dark Beast is also after the Summers brother.
When Cable travels to Genosha, Sugar Man thinks the mutant is actually X-Man. He decides to reveal himself to this Nathan Summers only to learn that his paranoia has gotten the better of him. He attempts to destroy his lab and escapes, managing to hide any evidence of his involvement.
Sugar Man is almost found out by the 616 Mr. Sinister and begins working with the Dark Beast to keep their existence a secret. If Sinister knew that they were using his own research would set back decades of plans on both their parts.
Sugar Man temporarily is able to return to the Age of Apocalypse timeline and attempts to create a super virus to unleash on Earth 616. He is foiled by Nate Grey’s involvement, as Nate is able to recruit Magneto and Forge.
Sugar Man, alongside the other Age of Apocalypse refugees, are temporarily targeted by the Shi’ar. Fellow refugee Holocaust has a shard of the M’Kraan Cyrstal embedded in his armor which offends the Shi’ar’s religious views. After removing the shard, the alien race sends all the mutants back to Earth.
After Cassandra Nova’s destruction of Genosha, Sugar Man is nearly killed by Callisto by a pipe through his massive head. Sugar Man miraculously recovers, however, and is among those mutants that Beast desperately seeks out during his attempts to reverse the effects of M-Day. Sugar Man declines, however, claiming he is out of Beast’s price range.
Sugar Man eventually resurfaces in search of the “Omega Machine.” He eventually finds this powerful device in a HAMMER facility with Nate Grey connected to it. Sugar Man reconfigures the device to open portals to other dimensions and attemps to again return to the Age of Apocalypse timeline. Hoping to gain some peace, Nate pushes himself and uses all of his power to open a portal back to their home timeline. Just as Sugar Man is about to go through, however, Moonstar stops him and delivers him into the custody of Captain Steve Rogers.
Dark Beast breaks Sugar Man out of prison and the pair rebuild the dimensional portal, successfully returning to the Age of Apocalypse. They use the life seed to resurrect a number of fallen mutants to give Weapon Omega an army. The Human Resistance eventually capture Sugar Man and give him to Penance. Penance plans to reform Sugar Man and use his knowledge to reform society.
After 600 hundred new mutant signatures mysteriously vanish, Colossus takes a group of young mutants to investigate. They learn that Sugar Man has created the new mutants and intends on traveling to the future where he will raise them under his control.
