In order to gain allies during his Infinity War, the Magus sought out the extra-dimensional god Anthropomorpho. This god rules over a race known as Manifestations that are complex drone beings capable of being molded into avatars for cosmic beings. At the request of the Magus, several Manifestations are transformed into horrific doppelgangers of the Earth’s mightiest heroes. These doppelgangers are deployed to the Earth to attack their mirror images and, if they win, merge with them and take over their life. When the Spider-Doppelganger attacks Spider-Man, the Hobgoblin and Demogoblin are also nearby. Mistaking the Doppelganger for the webhead, Hobgoblin attacks and seemingly kills the creature. The Demogoblin, believing the doppelganger can prove useful, uses mystical energy to resurrect the creature. When the Magus is defeated, all of his Manifestation troops disappear save the Doppelganger.

Together, the Demogoblin and Doppelganger battle Ghost Rider, Blaze, Deathspawn and Venom. The Doppelganger is separated from the Demogoblin and soon adopted by Carnage and Shriek to become part of the “Carnage Family.” Demogoblin rejoins his ally along with the villain Carrion. Doppelganger mentally attaches to Shriek as a mother figure, even going so far as defending her from an assault from Carnage. Carnage is amused at first but ultimately stabs Doppelganger several times before throwing the beast off of a roof. The creature is quickly forgotten and thought dead.

Years later, Doppelganger reveals that it survived the attack and has changed its shape slightly. It also is capable of rudimentary speech and sets out to rescue its mother, Shriek. This attempt fails and Doppelganger seems to die once more. Somehow, however, it wakes up on an autopsy table in Ravencroft and rejoins with an escaping Shriek to wreak havoc. The pair later encounter the new symbiote Scorn before rejoining with Carnage. After Carnage is captured, Doppelganger flees for parts unknown. It aids the Spiders in their war against the Inheritors. When Carnage and Shriek start a cult that worships Knull, Doppelganger returns to its mother and helps them in their crusade.
