Arthur is accidentally awakened from his magical slumber by Tom Prentice, an archaeology student, in the year 3000, thereby fulfilling the prophecy that Arthur would return when England needs him most. Arthur makes Tom his squire and the pair travel to Stonehenge to free Merlin, who has been trapped there for centuries. Together, the trio intend to retrieve Excalibur and help free the planet from an attack by an alien race as well as four autocratic rulers.
Many members of Athur’s court have been reincarnated. Guinevere is now Joan Acton, an American military commander. Lancelot is reborn as Jules Futrelle, French industrialist and philanthropist. Sir Galad is reborn as a samurai and devout follower of the Bushido code of honor. Sir Percival has been transformed into a Neo-Man, a zombie transformation applied to political prisoners of the autocrats, but retains some of his personality, including his gentle manner. Gawain returns as a South African family man. Tristan and Isolde are both reincarnated as women, which causes Tristan to reexamine his views on human sexuality and gender roles. However, the love between the two reigns supreme.
Modred, the illegitimate son of Arthur, is also reincarnated in this new world as Jordan Matthew. Matthew has risen to power in the United Nations and works with Morgan le Fay to fuse the Holy Grail into a suit of armor before assassinating the four world leaders, so the pair can rule the world.
The Round Table is reconstitute on Lancelot’s orbital habitat, from which the knights battle all their enemies. They eventually trace the alien invasion to a previously unknown tenth planet of the solar system. There, Morgan le Fay’s spirit conquers and enslaves the native population, leading to their eventual invasion of Earth. During the knights’ investigations, Merlin is also captured again and held in Morgan’s citadel.
Galahad sacrifices himself so the others can enter the citadel and free Merlin. The heroes are able to overpower Morgan and leave the planet, with only Arthur remaining behind. Arthur faces Morgan alone, as she calls back all the alien invaders from Earth. Arthur quietly forgives Lancelot and Guinevere, wishes them a happy life and then strikes a stone with Excalibur. This blow unleashes a massive mystical nuclear explosion that consumes Morgan and her entire citadel.
The knights all lead mostly happy lives. Gawain returns to his new family. Tristan and Isolde consummate their relationship. Tom Prentice, now a knight, leads the rebuilding of London. Guinevere and Lancelot are together and Guinevere is pregnant. Merlin leaves, waiting for the cycle to begin again when they are needed. And on an alien world, a simple creature flees an armed group only to find Excalibur and pull it from a stone.
